LET THE GAMES BEGIN: Miami Dolphins vs. Dallas Cowboys kick off the 2013-2014 NFL season

Fawcett Stadium - The Cowboys and Dolphins meet Sunday night in the annual Hall of Fame Game

CANTON, Ohio – Finally, football season is back.

If anything the Dallas Cowboys will be back on the field tonight for the first of five preseason games. The Cowboys take on the Dolphins in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, following an emotional night of induction speeches, including ones from Larry Allen and Bill Parcells.

But now the focus shifts to the game. Don’t expect to see many of the starters play long, if at all.

Headline players such as Tony Romo, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware and Dez Bryant are not expected to play. Other starters such as Miles Austin, DeMarco Murray, Brandon Carr and Sean Lee could be held out for precautionary reasons as well.

But there are plenty of other players this team can evaluate.

GAMEDAY RESOURCES - Miami Dolphins vs. Dallas Cowboys - Hall of Fame Game Canton Ohio - The Boys Are Back blog

Joseph Randle, RB: The rookie very well might receive the most playing time of any of the backup running backs going behind DeMarco Murray. Randle has definitely caught some attention since he threw himself into padded practices. He shined on the goal line, and he’s shown good hands in the passing game. Thanks to the constant rotation between the Cowboys’ five backs in training camp, we have yet to see Randle develop any kind of rhythm. It should be fun to see how he operates with more opportunities, not to mention a chance to show how he holds up against real contact.

J.J. Wilcox, S: Wilcox is probably the non-starter on this team who excites me the most. We’ve seen him smack people in practice, and we’ve heard the Cowboys coaches talk about his aggressive tendencies. I don’t think it’s wise to expect some kind of revolutionary performance during his first NFL appearance, but it’s fun to see such an intriguing talent get an opportunity at a position of need for the defense. With the starters sure to see little to no playing time, Wilcox should get plenty of opportunity to show off. And I think he will.

David Arkin, G: He’s the only guard on this team that hasn’t had some kind of injury here in training camp. Not trying to jinx Arkin, but I’m anxious to see what he can do with this opportunity. I could see him playing the whole game and that is important because as much as we want to see him face the No. 1, I want to see him against Miami’s third-teamers, too. It’ll be a good way to gauge the progress Arkin has apparently made.

Matt Johnson, S: Of course it’s Matt Johnson. All we’ve heard for 15 months is how good he can be when healthy. He appears to be healthy now and I’m curious like everyone else to see how he performs. For his own sake, he needs to be able to play physical, make some plays and come out of this game healthy and ready to it again Friday.

Gavin Escobar, TE – At this point, it’s clear Escobar can catch the ball. But we don’t know how he’ll hold up on the line as a blocker or how explosive he’ll be off the line. He seems comfortable when the ball’s in the air, but I want to see if he has a knack for finding the open spot in a coverage and a feel for getting away from his man on his route. He needs to excel on passing plays and in the red zone to warrant the Cowboys’ pick.

B.W. Webb, CB – It’s unrealistic to assume any player can come up with a game-changing play every week. But Webb has the capability to change a game with his instincts and speed out of the nickel package. He’s come on in recent practices with more interceptions, and if he can transfer that to the game, that will help him find his way onto the field quickly in real games. I also want to see how he can contribute on special teams and whether he can be an option as a kick or punt returner.

Travis Frederick – The rookie center has been steady in camp with his calls and how he has managed the position. He has played comfortable and confident but this will be his first game action in the NFL so the nerves might be tested early. He should see plenty of action at both center and guard but I am especially interested how he fares at center which is his more natural position and should be where he is opening day.

DeVonte Holloman – In camp, he has been one of those players that is always around the ball, Of the young linebackers, the coaches have worked him at several different positions and combinations with the other linebackers. I have been impressed with his ability to not only defend the run physically at the point but he has also done a nice job as well in coverage. I am interested if he can show up as a situational player but also handle a steady diet of special teams work as a core guy. I believe he is one of those players that with experience can do several things for the squad.

INTERIOR DEPTH INSURANCE: Why the Dallas Cowboys traded for Miami offensive lineman Ryan Cook

Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Ryan Cook - The Boys Are Back blog

On the day of final cuts in the NFL, the Cowboys continued to address a problem area from last season by bolstering the interior of their offensive line.

The Cowboys acquired veteran offensive lineman Ryan Cook from the Miami Dolphins for a 2013 seventh-round draft pick. Cook (6-6, 325) will be a backup center and guard for the Cowboys.

Cook, 29, has started 40 of the 77 games. A second-round pick out of New Mexico in 2006, has started games at center, right guard and right tackle.

The Cowboys were able to get an up-close look at Cook on Wednesday at Cowboys Stadium when he started at center against Dallas in the preseason finale.

“We knew that there was a possibility here, so we really evaluated him in the ballgame,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday on “The Fan” KRLD-FM (105.3). “This really was done for our depth, plus he’s very capable because he’s started several games in the NFL. He’s very capable of getting out there and competing. Hopefully you’ll see a lot of him this year.”

The Cowboys still plan to start Phil Costa at center. Costa started Wednesday and was in for 12 offensive plays. He had been out since Aug. 10 with a back injury but is expected to play in the season opener Wednesday at the Giants.

The Cowboys signed free-agent guards Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau this off-season with the expectation that they would start. Both battled injuries but are healthy now.

Ankle injuries to reserve interior offensive linemen Bill Nagy and Kevin Kowalski hurt the Cowboys’ depth. Nagy was waived in mid-August, and Kowalski has been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, keeping him out of the team’s first six games.

The Cowboys started working guard David Arkin at center in training camp, but he struggled with his shotgun snaps throughout the preseason. Arkin, a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 out of Missouri State, didn’t appear in any games last season.

“We all know that we’ve been struggling to some degree with Kowalski out the entire spring as well as during training camp,” Jones said. “We have counted on him for depth and don’t want to totally dismiss him, but he’s down the road with where we are and what we’ve seen.”

COSTA ON THE ROSTA: Garrett hopeful Costa will practice Monday; Jerry Jones expects him in preseason final

Dallas Cowboys Phil Costa

While Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was a little more cautious in saying that he hopes injured center Phil Costa will practice on Monday and then determine whether he will make his preseason debut against preseason final against the Dolphins on Wednesday, owner Jerry Jones had no doubts about the center’s availability.

"I’m expecting him to play Wednesday," Jones said. "It would surprise me if he doesn’t play Wednesday."

Costa has missed the first three preseason games with a back injury. The Cowboys would like to get him some time on the field against the Dolphins with guards Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings to gain some chemistry before the season opener against the Giants Sept. 5

SACKS MOUNT: Four sacks, but none from DeMarcus Ware

The Dallas Cowboys collected four sacks against Matt Moore, but none came from the team’s leader in that category. DeMarcus Ware, who came into the game with 14 sacks, appeared to have his 15th early in the fourth quarter, but the play was negated by an illegal contact penalty against Abram Elam.

Victor Butler registered his third sack, tying a season high, and Kenyon Coleman had his first sack in five years. The other sacks came from Orlando Scandrick and Sean Lee.

Ware said he also was impressed by the play of Anthony Spencer, who was in the Dolphins backfield all afternoon, finishing with a team-high eight tackles, including three for losses.

“I don’t know he gets back there, but he finds ways to make those tackles and make them third and 5, second and 12,” Ware said. “Those are the plays that we need.”

ARLINGTON — Seemingly overmatched and definitely outplayed in so many areas, including the defensive front, the secondary, the offensive line, and on top of all that, the quarterback throws a couple of what-the-heck-was- that picks to start the game.

There were obviously more than enough butt-whippings on Thanksgiving afternoon for the Cowboys to end up a cooked turkey.

“A lot of things on this tape we aren’t going to like,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.

Actually, it’s a game tape that would be better off torched.

But NFL rules say that after 60 minutes of clock time, you add up the points for both teams, and…

ARLINGTON — Tony Romo doesn’t care about winning in style. He’s leading the Dallas Cowboys to victories, and that’s all that matters.

Romo overcame a pair of early interceptions by throwing two touchdown passes to Laurent Robinson and rookie Dan Bailey made a 28-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Dallas Cowboys a 20-19 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.

The Cowboys (7-4) were never able to grab control, but also never trailed by more than six points. The defense gave up scores on four straight series, but limited the damage because three of those were field goals. They finally got a stop with Dallas trailing 19-17.

Romo took over on his 36-yard line with 2:59 left. He completed a few passes, then rookie DeMarco Murray kept grinding out yards and winding down the clock to set up Bailey’s winner.

“We did enough to give ourselves a chance to win the game,” Dallas coach Jason Garrett said.

This was the second straight game that Bailey ended with a field goal, and the fourth time he’s done it this season. The kick was his 26th straight made field goal, matching the second-best in club history.

It also was a measure of redemption for Cowboys fans, coming 18 years after the Dolphins won a Thanksgiving game on a last-second field goal following Leon Lett’s memorable gaffe on a snowy afternoon. This time, conditions were so balmy that the glass end-zone doors at Cowboys Stadium were opened for the first time all season.

Dallas won its fourth straight, continuing its best streak since a division championship season in 2009. The Cowboys also grabbed sole possession of first place in the NFC East, moving a half-game ahead of the Giants. New York plays at New Orleans on Monday night.
