IRVING, Texas – The 2014 NFL draft is finally here, and with it comes the final opportunity to predict the Dallas Cowboys picks.
The names surrounding the Dallas Cowboys No. 16 (overall) pick should all be familiar by now, but there’s no clear-cut consensus on what Dallas should do with its first pick – located right in the middle of the first round. That difference of opinion is perfectly illustrated in this week’s mocks, as all five writers selected a different first round choice.

Bryan:There is no doubt in my mind that they are hunting for a right defensive end in this draft but with the 16th pick, the guy they want in Anthony Barr is off the board. I believe Aaron Donald will be gone as well. If they cannot move, then the consideration becomes Zack Martin, Odell Beckham and Ryan Shazier. If this is the case, I they might believe they could grab a receiver later and take Shazier but the value of Beckham is much too good to pass up here and make him the selection. I am very excited about the selection of Cassius Marsh, defensive end and linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis and what they can bring to the defensive. Khyri Thornton also helps me along the defensive line at that one technique. I am also looking for traits late in the draft and quarterback, Logan Thomas surly fits that bill.
David: I just can’t talk myself into Barr or Donald being available, but Martin should make an immediate impact on the offensive line. Crichton falling to No. 47 likely requires some luck, but I think he’s a Day 1 contributor if so. With both lines addressed, the Cowboys are free to take a fantastic slot receiver in Landry – again, I’d expect him to play behind Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams from the outset. If Reid is available to bolster the defensive tackle depth in the fourth round, I’d have to consider that a steal – most see him as a three-technique, which the Cowboys covet. Taking a running back seems like a luxury, but Freeman is a hard runner and a good blocker, making him a good insurance policy for DeMarco Murray. With the slew of seventh-rounders, I’m going defense-heavy – specifically defensive end. Hopefully someone turns into something special. Gilbert, who played just down the road, could be an interesting project.
Ed: I might be crazy. Jerry Jones told us it wasn’t a priority in his pre-draft press conference. The hype at the QB position has been on Johnny Manziel. Why am I picking Blake Bortles? I think the Cowboys will be wiped out at 16, and he may be the best option available. Yes, he won’t play this year (hopefully), but I’m taking this pick and investing in a very bright future if he is available. Moving forward, I think the Cowboys will end up with Timmy Jernigan one way or another in this draft. They could take him in a trade back scenario, or grab him if he falls into the second. You’ll see that Nick has Cody Latimer in the second, and that is probably more accurate, but with the wealth of receivers in this class I’m hoping he might be available in the third. The rest of my draft addresses some needs and takes some risks. Overall, I’d be very happy with this class if it turned out this way.
Nick:My trade last week didn’t sit well with everyone so we nixed all trades, otherwise I’d stick with Anthony Barr, but I just don’t see him being there at 16. Shazier would be a really good solid pick who steps right in and starts at one of the two OLB spots. Latimer might not last to 47 and the same could be said for Joyner, a versatile player in the secondary. Smith gives the team more depth up front. Not sure if the Cowboys like Thomas at all, but if you’re good enough for an SI cover, good enough for me. I think he’s a dynamic player who makes a difference. If Dixon falls to the seventh, Cowboys could get a steal in a physical player with good speed. Westbrooks is the only player I’ve kept on my mock all three times.
Rowan: I think the most likely scenario is the Cowboys end up trading out of the 16th pick, but for mock draft’s sake, I don’t think the Cowboys would pass if Barr’s there. That’s the only way I think they stay put. They need to help their defensive line, and the Cowboys have had a history of turning second-round picks who fell from injury into starters. If Easley can stay on the field, this could end up being the best pick of the draft. The Cowboys need more interior linemen, and I suspect they grab help there in the middle rounds. Dozier fills that request. I think their next pick is a Smith – whether it’s Telvin, Marcus or Chris. The other two are gone, and Chris Smith fits the pass-rushing bill. Huff’s been a constant on my mock drafts, and I think the dynamic player complements the other receivers.

2014 NFL DRAFT NEWS: Record-breaking number of underclassmen to enter NFL Draft Class of 2014 | Revised
A record 98 underclassmen, including Johnny Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney, have made themselves eligible for the NFL draft in May.
The league released the list of early entrants Sunday and said the number has risen six straight seasons. The deadline for underclassmen to apply was Jan. 15.
Last year, 73 underclassmen entered the draft. The year before it was 65 and in 2011 it was 56.
Also, four players who recently graduated and still have eligibility left are joining the draft class but aren’t included in the number. Most notable among those is Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Southern California defensive back Dion Bailey, Arizona State linebacker Carl Bradford and Alabama linebacker Adrian Hubbard are also juniors who have informed the league they have graduated.
Among the early entrants expected to be selected near the top of the draft are Manziel, the Texas A&M quarterback, Clowney, the defensive end from South Carolina, and Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins.
The draft is May 8-10 in New York.
LSU for the second straight season had the most players of any school to leave early. The Tigers had seven early entrants this season, including wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., after 11 LSU players left early last year.
Alabama and Southern California each had five leave early, along with California. Cal, which went 1-11, has six players listed among the early entrants, but that includes defensive end Chris McCain, who was dismissed from the team in September.
National champion Florida State lost four players early, including All-America defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan and receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who caught the winning touchdown in the BCS championship game against Auburn. Notre Dame, Florida and South Carolina also had four early entrants.

The NFL announced today the names of 98 players who have been granted special eligibility for the 2014 NFL Draft on May 8-10 in New York.
Each of the 98 players has met the league’s three-year eligibility rule and each has submitted a written application in which he renounced his remaining college football eligibility. The deadline for receiving applications was January 15.
The NFL Draft will kick off in primetime for the fifth consecutive year. The first round will be held on Thursday, May 8. The second and third rounds are set for Friday, May 9. Rounds four through seven will be held on Saturday, May 10.
The number of players granted special eligibility is a new record, up 25 from last year. The number has increased six years in a row.

2014 NFL DRAFT ORDER: Houston Texans hold first pick, Dallas Cowboys in a coin flip for Sweet #16
The top-20 order for the 2014 NFL Draft is now set with the regular season complete. The Houston Texans will pick No. 1 overall for the third time in franchise history.
The order of picks 21-32 will be based on the outcome of the NFL playoffs. Updated first-round mock drafts can be found here.

2013 NFL SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT: Six players declared eligible this season
NFL teams were alerted over the holiday weekend of the six players eligible for Thursday’s supplemental draft.
Alphabetically, they are:

The two most prominent players are the receivers Peace and Ross (pictured above), who combined for 110 passes for 1,057 yards and four touchdowns in 2012 and were being counted on by their collegiate teams to produce even more as seniors.
Like most supplemental draft prospects — including several others from this year’s class — Peace and Ross requested special eligibility for inclusion into the NFL’s annual July draft because each ran into trouble at school.
Peace caught 54 passes for 603 yards and two scores in 2012 for the Cougars. Ross caught 56 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns in 2012 for the Boilermakers.
Ross is the more dynamic athlete of the two.
The 5-11, 186-pounder possesses good quickness to make defenders miss and above average hands.He is more quick than fast, however, and may not possess the top-end speed teams are looking for in a mid-sized wideout. Ross was productive over his three seasons at Purdue after signing as a highly regarded prep out of Ormond Beach, Florida and leaves the school with 100 receptions for 959 yards and six scores. He saw time as a kick returner as a freshman, averaging 23.1 yards in 12 opportunities.
He was placed on indefinite suspension from the team in February for a violation of team rules. He previously missed the 2011 Little Caesars Bowl due to academics.
Peace was deemed academically ineligible and kicked off the team just last month. Like Ross, the 5-11, 190-pound Peace offers good lateral quickness but he does not possess the speed to run away from defenders.
While the receivers are the most productive players in the 2013 supplemental class, scouts could be just as intrigued by the defenders eligible this summer, including a quick-footed cornerback who reportedly already caught the eye of one NFL team.
THE EIGHTH ROUND: Dallas Cowboys sign undrafted free agent LB Brandon Magee
The Dallas Cowboys gave undrafted free agent linebacker Brandon Magee a $70,000 bonus to sign with them after this weekend’s NFL Draft. It doesn’t mean Magee will be guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster. But it means that the Cowboys really wanted to give him an opportunity to latch on as a weakside linebacker in the team’s new 4-3 defense.
As Florio points out, that number is higher than any 7th-round pick received in 2012 (Justin Anderson, the first pick in the 7th round last year, got $69,124 from the Colts). It’s also significantly higher than the $10,000 bonus the Cowboys gave Tony Romo as an undrafted free agent in 2003.
Magee was one of 15 undrafted free agents the Cowboys came to terms with this weekend. He was also one of the 28 players the Cowboys brought to Valley Ranch for pre-draft interviews, which could explain why they were so eager to get him signed.
Magee was one of the captains of the Arizona State football team last year, totaling 113 tackles, 12.5 for loss, 6.5 sacks and 2 INTs as a senior.

If the Cowboys would have had a 7th round pick, that’s probably they guy they would have taken. Pay him the money, get him into camp, and watch him work. If you decide Bruce Carter can play the SAM, then you might have just found your WILL of the future. If Carter plays WILL, you have a solid, solid backup. The kid can play.
2013 POST-DRAFT SIGNINGS: Dallas Cowboys add 15 undrafted free agents
IRVING, Texas – Over the years the Cowboys have excelled in landing undrafted free agents that make the 53-man roster, so it stands to reason a few of the 15 signings will make the club in 2013.
Last year, Cole Beasley, Ronald Leary and Ben Bass spent time on the active roster.

Interesting to note the Cowboys did not sign an offensive lineman. Perhaps some could come in on a tryout basis for the May 10-12 rookie mini-camp. One tryout player, who is expected to sign is tight end B.J. Stewart from Cumberland.
UPDATE: TE BJ Stewart has signed with Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent
Cumberland (Tenn.) University tight end BJ Stewart has signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, upping the team’s total undrafted free agent signings to 16.
Stewart told his hometown Rome, Ga., newspaper, “It really is a dream come true. Being a kid, my family always told me I would play in the NFL, so it’s just a dream come true.”
Stewart (6-4, 263) led Cumberland last season with 21 catches for 396 yards and five touchdowns.
Stewart played defensive end in 2010 and 2011 at Cumberland before switching to tight end last season. He came to Cumberland for wrestling, and he was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the heavyweight division for two weeks in 2009-2010.

2013 NFL DRAFT: Day-Two breakdown and analysis on today’s three Dallas Cowboys selections
If the opinion on the Dallas Cowboys’ draft was confused or uncertain 24 hours ago, it certainly seems to have cheered up heading into the weekend.
Dallas added two new weapons to what was already a potent offense, and they secured a playmaker in a position of need. That’s highlighted by Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams, who many thought the Cowboys might snag in the first round.
So, to recap: Jerry Jones and Co. grabbed a receiver many thought was a first round talent, and they upgraded the depth at safety. Tight end Gavin Escobar is a bit of an unknown, but he offers an intriguing receiving option to compliment Jason Witten.
So if Thursday night’s first round was a bit of a head scratcher, Friday night feels more like a fist pump.
Bryan Broaddus:
I’m not surprised that they went with a tight end in this draft but I thought it would have been later and more of the blocking type like Sims or Jefferson. Gavin Escobar is a big body that can get down the field and make adjusting catches. Hands are outstanding which is one of his best traits. He will need to develop some strength and toughness at the point of attack and work on his technique but he has a chance. Know the scouts were really high on his ability to develop because of what we had seen on tape.
The scout in me was really hopeful that the front office would have been able to pull both Bennie Logan and JJ Wilcox for this Monte Kiffin defense, but they were only able to grab one in Wilcox but in my view, it was a really nice get. I really enjoyed studying his film and watching him play live at the Senior Bowl along with wide receiver Terrence Williams. Wilcox will knock you stiff and Williams is a steady, polished route runner that can make consistent plays.
Ed Cahill:
The Dallas Cowboys made it clear with their first three picks in this draft that they are maximizing their investment in Tony Romo. I had Gavin Escobar in my final mock draft in the fourth round, but truth be told I thought he might be taken in the third. I still like the value, and on tape, the kid catches everything.
Terrance Williams gives you an immediate contributor and an eventual replacement for Miles Austin. He is a guy the Cowboys were probably considering in the second, and to have him fall to them in the third must have sent high fives around the War Room.
J.J. Wilcox is a guy we have followed on The Draft Show all offseason, and a player the Cowboys staff has spoken highly of in the months leading up to the draft. Just from hearing his first few interviews he sounds like a great kid, and I think he might end up being an even better player. There may have been a few safeties in this class more NFL ready right now, but I think Wilcox projects better than most of them.
Nick Eatman:
I can’t lie and say I knew much – if anything – about Gavin Escobar before the pick. He certainly passes the eye test with his size. I have some concerns about getting another pass-catching tight end who needs to work on his blocking. Isn’t that James Hanna? But still, it’s a big weapon for Romo.
But I wanted the Cowboys to take Terrance Williams instead. So naturally, I like the third-round pick to get the Baylor WR. I think he’s a polished, NFL-ready receiver. Look how the other two Baylor receivers did last year as rookies. I think he’ll contribute right away. Wilcox fits a position of need and he’ll have a chance to compete with Matt Johnson and Will Allen to start.
Rowan Kavner:
In getting Gavin Escobar – It seemed more likely the Dallas Cowboys might grab a running back, receiver or safety here rather than a tight end who seemed to excel more as a pass-catcher than a blocker. But he did score 13 touchdowns in his final two seasons, and this team could use his 6-6 frame to help out near the goal line and erase the red zone woes.
As a candidate for the Cowboys’ first round pick, getting Terrance Williams, the nation’s leading receiver in college last season, provided great value in the third round. The trade with San Francisco looks better today than it did the day prior by adding the local star, particularly if they can figure out how to use Williams and Escobar in conjunction with each other.
Safety J.J. Wilcox was a candidate in our mock drafts because of his athleticism and potential, which were both draws for the Cowboys. He doesn’t have much experience as a safety after moving around positions, but he could end up being a special playmaker at safety and should be an immediate contributor on special teams.

- One of my favorite players to study on tape…this guy is not afraid to blow you up but you will also see him play a little in coverage….is a physical player like a linebacker…is very aggressive…will be a little too aggressive at times and miss in space but will wrap you up too…
- Has some strength when he tackles…ball carrier is on the ground…not afraid to be part of the attack…once he sees it, he is gone…does a nice job of avoiding blocks…will really rally to the ball…arrives with a bad attitude…can stay with his man in coverage but this is the area will he need the most work because he hasn’t had many opportunities…
- Will need to work on recognition but you don’t see busts or a dumb player here…better when he can come forward…emotional player…will carry the tight end up the field…can beat blocks in space…when he gets going, he can cover some ground…
- Loves to throw his body around…plays with huge effort…nose for the ball…has been a kickoff return man in his career…averaged over 25 yards a return…was a wide receiver early in his career….he will not be a hard player to find on the field…

Safety J.J. Wilcox, taken with the Dallas Cowboys’ second pick in the third round, played offense his first three years at Georgia Southern. He was a slot receiver and also carried the ball, finishing his career with 45 catches for 898 yards and four touchdowns and 138 carries for 968 yards and 13 touchdowns.
But it didn’t slow him down when he moved to safety last year. He recorded 88 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions.
“It doesn’t make you limited,” he said. “You have to be a good athlete and a good team player at any position. It helps you with ball skills, feet, hips. You understand route recognition, how receivers come out. Playing offense all three years definitely helped me out playing safety in college. Hopefully it will help me out once I’m in the NFL.”
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he was impressed by how smoothly Wilcox adapted to safety last year after not having played the position since high school.
“If you watch him play, he leaps off the screen at you,” Garrett said. “He can run, he can hit. He plays with great explosiveness. For a guy who hadn’t done this since high school, he really seemed to pick up the position well.”
Wilcox said he likes playing safety, anyway.
“You know, back in the days when you were playing Emmitt Smith and John Lynch, playing tiger football in the back yard growing up, I laid a couple guys out,” he said, drawing laughs from reporters. “I got laid out a couple of times, too. But I was usually one of the ones that wound up on top.”
2013 NFL DRAFT–DAY TWO: Dallas Cowboys got steal with Baylor WR Terrance Williams
IRVING, Texas – During the 2009 season, Terrance Williams was a redshirt freshman at Baylor and was getting his team ready for a big game against Oklahoma State. During the week, Williams wore an orange No. 1 jersey on the scout team, simulating OSU’s star receiver Dez Bryant.
Four years later, Williams and Bryant are now teammates, and perhaps even the receiving duo of the future for the Cowboys. But if anything, Williams joins a current receiving corps that also features Miles Austin and promising youngsters Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley.
The Cowboys entertained the thought of taking Williams at No. 31, but went with Wisconsin center Travis Frederick. Williams was nearly taken at No. 47 on Friday, but San Diego State tight end Gavin Escobar was the eventual pick.
But at No. 74, the selection the Cowboys picked up Thursday by trading out of the 18th pick, they couldn’t pass on Williams for the third time. Williams, a local star from W.T. White High School in Dallas, said he couldn’t believe when he saw his phone ringing with the 972 area code on the number.
“It feels like a dream, to be honest, to be drafted by a team that I grew up watching and always liked,” Williams said. “To get a chance to play for them, this just means the world to me.”
Baylor head coach Art Briles visited with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett for about 30 minutes last weekend and said he got the feeling the Cowboys would take him if he was around.
“Dallas got a steal and he got a thrill,” Briles quipped Friday night after the pick. “It’s great for both sides. (Williams) got to go the place he’s always loved and supported and the Cowboys got a great football player and teammate. He’ll be a great professional.”
Briles knows a thing or six about sending receivers to the NFL. Last year, rookies Kendall Wright (Titans) and Josh Gordon (Browns) had successful seasons coming out of Baylor, which also produced Carolina three-year veteran David Gettis. Briles also coached Donnie Avery at Houston and recruited Wes Welker when he was an assistant coach at Texas Tech.
Briles said Williams is as NFL-ready as all of them.
“I think he’s ready, no question. He can jump on the field today and play,” said Briles, who had a quick response when asked to comment on the notion Williams might not have game-breaking speed. “First thing that pops in my mind is that he’s fast enough to have 1,800 yards and the leading receiver in America. Facts don’t lie.”
Williams (6-2, 212) ran a 4.52 at the combine last February. His 1,832 yards led the nation last year, along with 97 catches and 12 touchdowns. A finalist for Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s top receiver, Williams improved his stats every season, including 43 catches for 484 yards as a sophomore and 59 for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2011 with Robert Griffin III as the quarterback.
Earlier in his career, Williams had to wait his turn behind Wright and Gordon and shared some snaps with Lanear Sampson, who could be a late-round pick in this draft. So Williams shouldn’t have a problem learning from guys Bryant and Miles Austin.
“I can be a good bailout person – somebody who can also take the pressure off Dez, Miles and Jason (Witten),” Williams said. “And someone who can just continue to help them stretch out the field and make big catches when I’m called upon. That’s something I think I can really help out with.”
But make no mistake, Williams is certainly excited about teaming up with Bryant.
“That’s somebody that I really like and to get a chance to play besides him means the world to me because now I get to learn from one of the best and somebody who can help me throughout this whole process and bring the best out in me. I’m just ready to go to work and play football now.”
Editors note: Also think of Terrance Williams as a replacement for Kevin Ogletree’s past role on the roster. Williams has a tremendous upside and with his speed, could push all of the current wide receivers on the team.
2013 NFL DRAFT–DAY TWO: Dallas Cowboys use second pick on towering tight-end Gavin Escobar
IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys used their second round pick at No. 47 overall on San Diego State tight end Gavin Escobar.
Escobar compiled 122 catches for 1,646 yards and 17 touchdowns in his three-year career. He actually had his most productive season his sophomore year in 2011, when he finished with 51 catches for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. Escobar followed that up with 42 catches for 543 yards and six touchdowns last year.
The 6-foot-6, 254-pound tight end is the highest pick the Cowboys have used on a tight end since selecting David LaFleur in the first round with the 22nd overall pick in 1997.
The last time the Cowboys used a second-round pick on a tight end was in 2008, when they took Martellus Bennett with the 61st overall pick. Escobar was the third tight end selected in this draft, behind Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz.
The Cowboys already have a backup tight end behind Jason Witten in James Hanna, a sixth-round pick last year, but Escobar should be able to compete immediately for playing time. Witten just finished his 10th NFL season last year with a career-high 110 catches for 1,039 yards.

HOLD YOUR HORSES: The 2013-2014 NFL schedule has not been finalized
The NFL usually releases the official regular-season schedule in the week prior to the NFL draft, but that will not be the case this year.
“The schedule is not finalized, and no release date has been determined,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement today (Monday).
The NFL told Sports Business Journal on Monday the schedule will come out in the next week or two. While the schedule in recent years has come out in the week before the draft, that isn’t always the case. The 2010 schedule was unveiled only two days before the draft. That was the first year the NFL moved to a Thursday night primetime start for the draft.
If you’re looking for a best guess as to the schedule’s release, April 23 would be it. But that’s just a guess. The schedule also might come out after the draft in another effort to “stretch out” the NFL calendar and keep football high in the headline stacks.
The announcement of this year’s schedule technically hasn’t been postponed because it never officially was set in the first place. This much we know: The Baltimore Ravens will open the season on the road in the NFL’s kickoff game.

2013 NFL DRAFT PRIMER: Big, bruiser running back from Michigan State visits Dallas Cowboys
IRVING, Texas – Le’Veon Bell could fit the Dallas Cowboys’ need for a bruiser as backup running back, capable of handling a full load at any point.
That’s why the Cowboys are one of two teams, along with the Jets, that the former Michigan State star running back said he’s visited so far. Bell was one of 30 players to take a pre-draft visit with the Cowboys.
“The running backs coach (Gary Brown) was very impressed,” Bell said on 105.3 FM The Fan. “He loved the way I can catch the ball. He loves the way I move, especially being a bigger guy. He loves the way I can get in and out of my cuts. I did my thing at Pro Day and in my individual workouts with the Cowboys, and I’m going to continue to impress.”
Bell made his first trip to see the Cowboys facilities this offseason and said he had a great two-day visit, describing the stadium as “unbelievable.” He talked to owner/general manager Jerry Jones, as well as executive vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Jason Garrett.
“They said they want another guy there to be a No. 2 guy who can eventually compete for a starting job,” Bell said. “They said basically they want two starting running backs. That’s what they’re looking for, and I feel like I can bring that to any team in the NFL.”
Bell, who ran for 1,793 yards last year, is on most draft boards as a third or fourth round pick, but he’s been told he could go even higher. He said he’s heard he could even jump into the first round, because of everything he can add to a team.
“I’m the biggest guy of all the backs, probably, height and weight, I can catch the ball out of the backfield just as good as any back,” he said. “I can get tough yardage just as good, if not better, than any back. There’s a lot of things that I can bring to a team. I played a lot of special teams, punt returner, kick returner. There’s a lot of things I can bring to a team, so much value. I’m a bigger guy, so pass protection would be a big plus for me, being able to block bigger linebackers and defensive ends at times.”
The running back grew up in Ohio, but he always watched former Jets running back Curtis Martin, even though his family consisted mostly of Steelers fans.
The Steelers and Jets are among the teams that have shown interest in Bell, along with the Cowboys, Colts and Texans. But Bell, who has friends who are Cowboys fans, doesn’t have a preference in his location or his role. He just wants an opportunity.
“I’m OK with whatever role,” Bell said. “I just want to get drafted and get into camp and compete. Once I compete, I just want a fair chance.”

Bryan Broaddus’ Mock Analysis: For the sake of this Mock Draft I have allowed history to dictate that a guard while slide down the board to the Cowboys spot at 18 and with that move, they would be more than happy to turn the card in of Jonathan Cooper of North Carolina who in my view is the best guard in the draft. When it comes back to their selection in the second round I have them staying in the Tar Heal State and choosing running back Gio Bernard who is a shorter player but gives them some quickness out of the backfield and a different style of a back to pair with Murray. There are those that think Bennie Logan in the 3rd might be a little rich there but I don’t think so and I believe the club feels the same way. The Cowboys did a private workout with him and brought him in on a visit. He could be that one technique that replaces Josh Brent. Gerald Hodges would be a nice fit as a potential Sam while Jakar Hamilton brings some toughness and coverage as a safety. CJ Johnson has outstanding timed speed and catches the ball well. He has played both inside and out so the fit is there. Again, in that round you are looking for traits to develop and he has several.
Nick Eatman’s Mock Analysis: Last week, I went against the mantra I’ve been saying for months – and that’s to draft big, especially on the offensive line. While safety is a need, hopefully that can be addressed in the second round. But if Warmack is around at No. 18, that would be a great pick. I moved Jones to the third round this week because of his injury concerns, but even if he doesn’t play right away, he’s got the talent to wait for. Goodwin is the pure runner that I think this team has missed for a while. Because of that track speed, he probably doesn’t make it that far down to the fourth round. And while the sixth round is probably too long to wait to draft a back, there is something intriguing about Johnson. He won’t be the highest back taken from his school, but he’s a fireplug of a player who is a great kickoff returner and has the toughness and attitude this team could use.
Ed Cahill’s Mock Analysis: In this situation I have the Cowboys selecting the best available players on their board. My first round pick has a lot of talent, but may slip to the Cowboys at the eighteenth pick. Bjoern Werner may have to play in rotation for a year, but he gives you depth on the line, a promising future, and some cap relief at the position next season. Kyle Long gives you some flexibility on the offensive line as he could play both guard and tackle. He should have the talent to come in and contribute right away. Justin Hunter has tremendous ability and would be great value if he falls into the third. Now, I’ve been against this for most of the offseason, but if the Cowboys were to bring in a veteran running back I could see them taking a chance on Marcus Lattimore. He’s a tremendous kid with all-pro talent, and given some time I think he could return to form. Kwame Geathers, brother of former Cowboy Clifton Geathers, provides a big body at the 1-technique on the defensive line. Jakar Hamilton is a former Georgia Bulldog who has first half of the draft talent. If he is available in the 5th or 6th it’s an absolute steal.
Rowan Kavner’s Mock Analysis: The needs at offensive line and safety will make the Cowboys consider a variety of options, but Vaccaro fills a need if available in the first round. It’s feasible that all five offensive linemen are gone by the Cowboys’ first pick, and if the top safety’s still on the board, that would make for a logical selection. They could still fill a need at guard in the second round and potentially get a player with first-round talent if Warford’s still on the board. Franklin had a tremendously productive season last year at UCLA and his sub-4.5 speed should draw some interest at the backup spot. I’m starting to think the Cowboys’ starter at right tackle will either be Doug Free or a free agent pickup, but Mills provides adequate size to work with and develop into a potential starter. At 6-foot-2 with 4.3 speed, Fuller has all the tools a team could want with a late pick.
David Helman’s Mock Analysis: I approached this mock draft using the scenario that all of the Cowboys’ offensive line targets were gone by No. 18. I don’t want to reach, and the defensive front needs plenty of help of its own. Sylvester Williams is just that type of pocket collapsing defensive tackle Dallas needs, with 13.5 tackles for loss and six sacks last season. If the Cowboys can’t find an offensive lineman they like in the first round, it seems imperative they nab one with their second pick, and Larry Warford is a big dude who played well for an awful team. Round 3 seems like the best place to find value at safety, as T.J.
McDonald is just one of a handful of quality guys who should be there. To make up for missing a lineman at No. 18, I wouldn’t mind them going overboard in the late rounds, starting with Ricky Wagner. I still think this team should add a decent running back, and Burkhead fits that power back mold, plus he’s got local ties. Fragel is inexperienced at offensive tackle but his massive 6-8 frame gives him a lot of upside.

PROSPECTS ON HOT SEAT: 2013 NFL Draft attendees announced
The green room at Radio City Music Hall in New York will be rather crowded this year. A total of 23 players have accepted an invitation to attend the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday, April 25.
In a year where the quarterback class lacks consensus top-shelf talent, two quarterbacks will be in New York: West Virginia’s Geno Smith and Florida State’s EJ Manuel.
That’s the same number as offensive guards making the trip: Alabama’s Chance Warmack and University of North Carolina’s Jonathan Cooper. Six defensive linemen and five offensive tackles will be in the house. Yes, this is the draft of the big uglies.
Smith figures to get the most attention of any player in the green room. Even though he might not get taken as early as people think, Smith still looks like a safe first-round pick. That’s true of most of the 23 players.
Odds are that at least one player invited will slip into round two, but every player in attendance has a shot of being selected Thursday night.
LSU safety Eric Reid is not a favorite of some analysts. Florida State offensive tackle Menelik Watson and Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant are two other players who could have a relatively long wait in the green room on draft day.
Some of the biggest names not going to New York include USC quarterback Matt Barkley, Notre Dame linebacker Manti T’eo and Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.
Lotulelei released a statement Wednesday saying that he has decided to watch the draft from Utah with his friends and family.
DALLAS DAY WORKOUTS: Top 30 local prospects spending the day at Valley Ranch (Special Feature)
IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys’ scouts will take a break from putting their draft board together today (Wednesday) to take part in the annual scouting combine known as Dallas Day.
The scouts and coaches will put local college players through a Combine style workout at Cowboys Stadium. The workout will allow Jerry and Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett to interact with those college players that might not have received an opportunity to play in an All Star game or attend the Combine.
College Scouting Coordinator Chris Hall historically has done an outstanding job of putting together a group of players that have Dallas as their hometown, along with players from SMU and TCU who are close to the complex at Valley Ranch, and this year is no different.
Each year, Dallas Day has produced better talent because of the job that programs like SMU and TCU have done with their overall program, and also because of the types of kids that are leaving the area and attending schools across the country.
From the Pro Days I was able to attend at SMU and TCU, players like
- defensive end Margus Hunt,
- running back Zach Line,
- receiver Josh Boyce and
- running back Matthew Tucker
will get their opportunity to visit with the club. Players with hometown ties to Dallas include
- quarterback Kyle Padron from Eastern Washington,
- Baylor wide receivers Lanear Sampson and
- Terrance Williams and
- Texas A&M receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu.
- Defensive ends RJ Washington of Oklahoma and
- DeMontre Moore of Texas A&M will be in as well.
When I worked in the scouting department here, Dallas Day was one of my favorite events because it gave you an opportunity not only to meet some of the top players in the area, but to see some players that might be sixth or seventh round considerations on the board. They could also be players that could become desired priority free agents after the draft. With the success that this team has had with those types of players after the draft, this day has always held great importance.

2013 NFL DRAFT PRIMER: One of these top-two offensive linemen prospects could fall to Dallas Cowboys
Chance Warmack plays with an edge and is considered one of the top guards in the draft.
No. 2 Offensive lineman: Chance Warmack
Position: Guard
Height/weight: 6-foot-2, 317 pounds
School: Alabama
Why he’s on the radar: The Cowboys signed Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau in free agency last year but still want to upgrade the interior of the offensive line. Warmack is considered one of the top guards in the draft and probably will be off the board when its time for the Cowboys to select at No. 18. Warmack doesn’t have the position flexibility the Cowboys normally want, but he’s a solid player who has the potential to be a starter for the next 10 seasons.
Projection: First round
Stretch Truths: Played all four years at Alabama. … Has strong punch and power to press a defender in pass protection. … Good lower body to anchor, and balance that matches. … Has excellent feet to get to second-level blocks and run his feet through contact. … Is comfortable with a tackle over his nose. … I only question his true foot speed after running 40 in 5.49 seconds. … He’s the top guard in the draft and has a real nasty side. … Overall opinion: Take him if he’s there with the 18th pick.

Name: Jonathan Cooper
Position: Guard
College: North Carolina
Height/Weight: 6-3, 310
Age: 23 (born Jan. 19, 1990)
Honors: Cooper was one of the nation’s most decorated offensive linemen in 2012. He was a finalist for the 2012 Outland Trophy, and he was a consensus All-American. Cooper was also selected first-team All-ACC and won the league’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy. He was named second-team All-ACC in his sophomore and junior seasons in 2010 and 2011.
Key stat: Injuries are big topic when it comes to the Cowboys, and understandably after 2012. Cooper was the model of reliability during his college career, starting a North Carolina record 47 games over four years.
Where He’s Headed: Cooper is widely regarded as either the best or second-best guard in this draft, along with Alabama’s Chance Warmack. But that doesn’t necessarily diminish Dallas’ chances of landing him. NFL teams don’t put the same premium on guards as they do on offensive tackles, and history proves that. In the last three drafts, the first guard off the board was taken 24th, 23rd and 17th. A guard hasn’t gone in the top 10 since 1997. And even if one of the duo goes early, the odds seem good that one of them will last into the mid round.
How He Helps the Cowboys:With a rushing attack that ranked almost last in the league, it’s safe to say the Cowboys could benefit from bolstering the line. Adding better protection for the newly-extended Tony Romo wouldn’t hurt either. Cooper has the versatility to play either guard or center, so he’d not only add depth but give the team flexibility in determining how best to improve the line.
Scout’s Take: Been on this guy for a while and have him over Chance Warmack of Alabama because I feel like that you can do more things with him scheme wise than Warmack. Square player that can hold his own inside. Very smooth player. Nice pull and adjust when he has to get outside, will find his target and sustain. Plays on his feet, rare to see him on the ground or off balance. Can adjust on the twist but also shows awareness on the blitz pickup. Can mirror the defender. Can keep position of his block on the move. Will run man past the play. Plays with nice leverage. Helps with the line calls. Will cross the pocket to help when uncovered. Aware to what is going on around him. Athletic enough to line up and play center if he had to, don’t believe Warmack could do that. Great fit for a team that runs zone schemes and wants their linemen on the move but is also strong enough to sit down on his man if he has to. –Bryan Broaddus

TIME FOR YOUTH MOVEMENT: Dallas Cowboys may already have players to fill some of the 2013 NFL Draft needs
With the 2013 NFL Draft merely weeks away, the Dallas Cowboys are in the final stages of preparing their draft board. The Dallas (and national) media and true blue Cowboy fans have their sights set on the perceived ‘needs’ of the 2013-2014 Dallas Cowboys roster. The consensus seems to be … draft for the trenches, find a strong safety, and add running back depth.
The most glaring need for the past few years has been on reinforcing the offensive line. That need is magnified by the recent 6-year extension and clear long-term commitment to Dallas quarterback Tony Romo. Jerry Jones did attempt to improve the offensive line during 2012 offseason. Largely, those moves didn’t pan out, due primarily to injuries. This year most people agree that the youth movement via the draft is the best solution.
Next, with the dismissal of Rob Ryan and the addition of defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, a few new needs surfaced. Kiffin believes that the current roster has good bones for the scheme change. He does have a few wish list requests … a 4-3 system safety and beefy pass rushing defensive lineman.
Offensively, the 2012 Dallas Cowboys kept up with the upper crust of the NFL in the passing game. The weakness was the run threat. While DeMarco Murray was outstanding when healthy, the concern is keeping the rhythm and balance when he’s not. With this in mind, the team has an open eye towards a compatible running back in this years draft. There are several young running backs currently on the roster that might fill this void. The question is … can they? Veteran Felix Jones isn’t really an option going into the 2013 season. Not because of his mental desire, or his leadership qualities … he’s simply deteriorated physically due to his knees.
The bread and butter of Jason Garrett’s offense has had to come from the passing game. The outside receivers (when healthy) remain two very formidable threats. This issue has been the slant receiver and the inside routes that many defenses leave open. With a total of nine receivers on the payroll, including last years fourth round pick, the Cowboys have several potential candidates. The hopes of finding that elusive 3rd receiver could very well be on the staff.
The Dallas Cowboys have 25 players that are entering their 2nd or 3rd season. All of these guys are 23-25 years old. That’s significant. Take a look at the players below, and ask yourself. Who’s going to be the next Sean Lee? Who will step up in 2013 and fill a need that currently exists? As we enter the 2013 NFL Draft, consider this … Dallas may already have players on the roster to fill some of the perceived needs. These young players are on the team because they show promise. This years NFL Draft will only enhance their potential.

2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Matt Johnson
Eastern Washington safety Matt Johnson was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys with the No. 135 overall pick in the fourth round. His senior season ended abruptly after sustaining a biceps injury. Johnson isn’t likely to start in his rookie season but he will compete for a role on the team. The Cowboys had their eye on Mark Barron and athletically, Johnson is comparable on paper.
Johnson ran a 4.54 40 yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times at his pro day. That is quite a performance for a defensive back. Johnson is quick to diagnose plays and reacts well instinctively. He plays physical to the whistle and wraps up cleanly. He’s at his best playing downhill which likely limits him to the strong safety position.
When in man to man coverage, he lacks the footwork to keep up with precise route runners. His feet will get tangled and he’ll fall back on his speed to make up for it.
Fourth round: S Matt Johnson from Eastern Washington
How he fared: Johnson missed the entire season and didn’t even practices much because of injuries to both hamstrings.
How he rates: He hasn’t played in a game yet, but the Cowboys believe he has the potential to start at safety for them in 2013.
College: The Dallas Cowboys aimed at bolstering their defense through the 2012 NFL Draft and hope they landed another defensive back to accomplish the task when they selected Matt Johnson with their second fourth round pick (135th overall). Johnson started every game he played (45) while at Eastern Washington, having his senior season cut short after seven games with shoulder surgery. During his time at EWU, Johnson amassed 341 tackles – fifth all-time in school history – 22 tackles for losses, 30 pass breakups and 17 interceptions – one shy of the school record – while exiting as the university’s all-time leader with six forced fumbles. As he makes the jump to the pro level, Johnson looks to pick up where he left off before the injury as he posted back-to-back 100-tackle seasons as a sophomore and junior.
FLASHBACK- 2012 NFL DRAFT: Cowboys have a clutch player when Danny Coale gets back on the field
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to see anything from receiver Danny Coale, a fourth-round pick a year ago. But if he can get on the field, his former coach said they will see a clutch player.
“One time, I was asked, ‘How does that guy always get open?’ ” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “Plays develop and plays develop and plays develop, and there’s Danny wide open – I don’t know how many times that happened at Tech.
“He’s fast, but you just look at him, you don’t think he is. He sneaks up on you. I think people underestimated his speed sometimes. But he catches the ball. He gets open. And he’s got some toughness to him.”
Beamer said he has not spoken to Coale since the Cowboys drafted him, but he knows his former player is doing his best to be ready for the season. A broken foot in the offseason and a hamstring problem in training camp were two of the reasons Coale wound up spending the entire year on the practice squad.
“Just knowing Danny, he’s always a very positive guy, always a guy that rose to the occasion,” Beamer said. “I’m pulling for him hard, I can tell you that.”
The Cowboys have another Virginia Tech player on the roster, tight end Andre Smith, who went undrafted in 2011 but signed with Chicago and then spent last year with Indianapolis.
“Another great kid – really pulling for him,” Beamer said. “Hope everything will work out great. That’s the one thing at Virginia Tech I’m as proud of as anything – the type of player we have in our program: really good kids, great character, want to be successful, want to work hard. Andre is a good example of that.”

2013 NFL DRAFT PRIMER: Dallas Cowboys insiders reveal their six-round mock draft
IRVING, Texas – This is the time of year when mock drafts are everywhere.
Websites from all over weigh in with various opinions on where these prospects are going to end up. So each Friday, the DallasCowboys.com staff will select their own mock draft, projecting what the Cowboys will do from rounds 1-6, along with some quick analysis for their decision.
To start it off, the staff has four different players going No. 18 to the Cowboys and none of them have Alabama guard Chance Warmack, who many of the “experts” suggest will fall to Dallas.
Obviously it’s still early in the game but let’s have some fun and let these guys take a stab at it:
Bryan Broaddus’ Mock Analysis: Going on the thought that all the offensive linemen with the exception of Fluker are off the board. Vaccaro is also off the board as well. Austin is on the board and team could field calls to move back but a chance to add the second best defensive tackle in the draft is too inviting so they turn in the card for Richardson. I think Pugh is a really good player than can work at a couple of different positions. Wheaton is a nice route runner with solid hands. I love Bell’s size and the ability catch the ball out of the backfield. And I really like how Jefferson looks on film as a blocker.
Nick Eatman’s Mock Analysis: I have a hard time thinking both Warmack and Cooper will be there, but if they are, it’s probably a smarter pick to take an interior lineman. But something tells me Vaccaro will be there and the Cowboys will address their safety needs here in the first round. I really like Jones from Alabama. His injury situation will drop him out of the first round but I wouldn’t let him get past me in the second. Reminds me a lot of Max Unger from the Seahawks. Randle looks like the ideal back with good size and has a power style with some speed. Sampson doesn’t have a great ‘wow’ factor but is a productive receiver with big-play ability.
Ed Cahills Mock Analysis: I’ve tried to convince myself that one of top two guards will be available at No. 18, but that is a risky assumption, so I played it safe and selected D.J. Fluker. He would give you a powerful run blocker on the right side of the line. I addressed the safety spot with Matt Elam. This guy is a great read-and-react player with a high motor that would fit well in the Cowboys new defensive scheme. Many will scoff at the Rex Burkhead selection, but when you turn on the film you see a runner with great vision and lateral quickness that could come in and contribute right way. My 6th rounder is not a sexy selection, but Michael Williams is a converted lineman who could prove to be a crucial run blocker in two tight end sets.
Rowan Kavner’s Mock Analysis: The Cowboys have a real opportunity to take advantage of a plethora of talent on the offensive line early on in this draft. Cooper or Chance Warmack would be a must have if still available. Snagging two linemen early would solve the Cowboys’ biggest problem from last season and give them the opportunity to let go of Doug Free if they so choose in June. It’s possible safeties Kenny Vaccaro, Eric Reid and Jonathan Cyprien are all gone by the third round, but Thomas could contend for a starting spot immediately. The guy was a total playmaker in college and can do the same as a ball hawk for a defense in desperate need of takeaways. Logan’s been on the Cowboys’ radar for a while and can fill a need at either the one or three technique. Potential steals are available in this draft at running back, from Rex Burkhead to Knile Davis, but if they’re gone, Stacy could provide some toughness.
David Helman’s Mock Analysis: I don’t think you can go wrong with either Cooper or Warmack, but it seems like Cooper is more likely to be there at No. 18. On top of that, his ability to shift to center could be valuable if the Cowboys have to play musical chairs with their line again. The other line needs help, too, and Short might be the best pass rusher of all the defensive tackles in this class with 6.5 sacks as a senior at Purdue. Thomas jumps out to me because of his abilities as a ballhawk – eight picks during his senior campaign – which is something this secondary needs. Mills is another offensive lineman who could switch positions, which could come in handy. Gillislee is a battering ram who doesn’t have too much wear-and-tear after limited carries early in his Florida career. Boyce has deceptive speed and shiftiness, which could spice up the competition for No. 3 receiver
